The component reflects the specific costs of the nuclear energy use in Germany. These include the cost for the search of a final repository, the disposal of radioactive waste, the dismantling and decommissioning of nuclear power plants as well as the cost that would result from a liability insurance against a super accident (in prices of 2010).
The use of nuclear power is significantly different from the use of other energy sources for several reasons, especially because of the generation of nuclear waste that has to be deposited safely for a very long period of time and – as seen in Fukushima and Chernobyl – the danger of a nuclear accident and unforeseeable long-term damages.
